Enrolment Schemes

  • Home scheme

    All students living in the home zone described below shall be entitled to enrol at the school at any time.

    School Zone:

    From the South end of the Waimakariri Bridge South to the Main North Road. East along the Main North Road to Marshlands Road. South along Marshlands Road to Guthries Road. South along Guthries Road to Belfast Road. Along Belfast Road to Blakes Road, South along Blakes Road to Radcliffe Road. Along a line drawn from the Radcliffe/Blakes Road intersection, along Mills Road to the Philpotts Road/Queen Elizabeth II Drive intersection, along Philpotts Road to a point just before Roslyn Avenue from where a line is drawn South-West to intersect with Cranford Street. Down Cranford Street to Edgeware Road, West along Edgeware Road to Trafalgar Street, along Trafalgar Street to St Albans Street, South-West along St Albans Street to Papanui Road. North along Papanui Road to Normans Road, along Normans Road to Strowan Road, along Strowan Road to Jeffries Road, West along Jeffries Road to Idris road, along Idris Road to Wairakei Road, along Wairakei Road to Manor Place, along Manor Place to Saffron Street, along Saffron Street to Greers Road, North along Greers Road to the intersection with Grahams Road, along Grahams Road to Staines Street. Along Staines Street, across Mooray Avenue to Hornsby Street. East along Hornsby Street to Farrington Avenue, along Farrington Avenue to Vauxhall Street, West along Vauxhall Street to Twyford Street, along Twyford Street to Breens Road, South along Breens Road to Waikrakei Road, West along Wairakei Road to the Christchurch Airport perimeter, North around the airport perimeter to McCleans Island Road, along McLeans Island Road to the 90° left hand turn after the Orana Wildlife Reserve, along a line from that corner to the Waimakariri River, along the Waimakariri River to the Southern end of the Waimakariri Bridge.

    (Please note: Where the school shares a boundary with Burnside High School, the Papanui High School zone includes all roads leading into the boundary roads but not the boundary roads themselves. In all other cases the zone includes houses on both sides of the boundary road.)

    Proof of Residence within the home zone may be required

    Each year, applications for enrolment in the following year from in-zone students will be sought by a date which will be published in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.
    This will enable the Board to assess the number of places which can be made available to students who live outside the home zone.

    Out of Zone Enrolments

    Each year the Board of Trustees will determine the number of places which are likely to be available in the following year for the enrolment of students who live outside the home zone. The Board will publish this information by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school. The notice will indicate how applications are to be made and will specify a date by which all applications must be received.

    Applications for enrolments will be processed in the following order of priority:

    1. First Priority will be given to students who have been accepted for enrolment in the following special programmes run by the school and approved by the Secretary for Education. Special Education for students with Intellectual Disability, and an Adult ESOL programme.
    2. Second Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of current students.
    3. Third Priority will be given to applicants who are siblings of former students.
    4. Fourth Priority will be given to applicants who are children of Board employees.
    5. Fifth Priority will be given to all other applicants.

    If there are more applicants in the second, third, fourth or fifth priority groups than there are places available, selection within the priority group will be by a ballot conducted in accordance with instructions issued by the Secretary under Section 11G(1) of the Education Act 1989.

    Parents will be informed of the date of any ballot by notice in a daily or community newspaper circulating in the area served by the school.

    Applicants seeking second or third priority status will be required to give proof of a sibling relationship.

    Adult ESOL Programme – Admission and Enrolment Guidelines

    The school offers a full time programme of study for adult new migrants who are speakers of other languages who comply with the following criteria.
    The maximum number of students that can be accommodated in the programme at any one time is 60 full time equivalents.

    Eligibility
    Students must:

    • Be unable to communicate effectively in English and have a desire to learn.
    • Have evidence from The NZ Immigration Service establishing the student’s status as a permanent resident.
    • Nominate what they consider to be their level of English; this will determine their initial temporary placement which will then be confirmed by class testing.


    Enrolment
    All enrolments must be approved by the Head of the ESOL Department.
    Procedures for enrolment in case of more applications than places available

    • Students who meet the criteria for enrolment in the Special Programme and live within the home zone, will be enrolled ahead of applicants from out of zone.
    • A ballot will be undertaken for students who meet the criteria for enrolment and who live outside the home zone, should the number of applicants exceed the number of places available.
    • The ballot will conform to the balloting procedures as set out in the Ministry of Education instructions August 2000.

    Special Education Programme for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (Kimi Ora Unit) – Admission and Enrolment Guidelines

    The school offers a programme of study for students with intellectual disabilities who comply with the following criteria.
    The maximum number of students that can be accommodated in the programme at any one time is 18.

    Eligibility
    Students require individualised attention because:

    • Their level of literacy and/or numeracy is considerably below that of their peers.
    • They have an intellectual, physical or sensory disability but are still able to benefit from some mainstream programmes.
    • They require an adapted educational programme to best meet their needs.

    An interview will be necessary for all applicants.
    Strong family support for the student and programme is necessary.

    Enrolment
    All enrolments must be approved by the Head of Student Support and the HOD Kimi Ora Unit.
    Procedures for enrolment in case of more applications than places available

    • Students who meet the criteria for enrolment in the Special Programme and live within the home zone, will be enrolled ahead of applicants from out of zone.
    • A ballot will be undertaken for students who meet the criteria for enrolment and who live outside the home zone, should the number of applicants exceed the number of places available.
    • The ballot will conform to the balloting procedures as set out in the Ministry of Education instructions August 2000.
