The Papanui High School music department has over 13 groups currently performing and competing locally, nationally and internationally including Jazz Band, Concert Band, Choir, Jazz Ensemble, Guitar Ensemble, Flute Ensemble, String Orchestra, Chamber music, Rock Bands etc.

The department also offers full year courses in audio engineering and studio work.
The music department performs regularly and students have the opportunity to perform in many different settings.

The Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble have gone on to gain Gold placing at the 2008, 2009 completions and provide students a chance to travel and perform to a wider audience.

The department offers all Achievement standards across year 11, 12 and 13 as well as standards at year 12 and 13 level.
